A good friend of mine, Michelle Livengood, who has four sons, was lamenting
to me one afternoon how there is such a dearth of quality, convicting books for boys. The more I thought about
what she said, the more I realized she was right. With three daughters and three sons of my own, I realized that
while I had spent years filling our family bookshelves with quality Christian titles for my daughters, the shelves
I had hoped to fill for my three boys was conspicuously empty. And so began my quest to find some truly life-changing
stories for my boys...and Michelle's.
Our "Young Men of Valor" series is the result of that quest. These are not just "stories for boys."
They are faith-building, life-challenging stories that will captivate your boys (actually, we've found that girls
love these stories too!) and encourage them to read, while at the same time convicting them to live fully for the
Lord. Check back often, we will be adding to this ever-expanding series as the books become done. While the books
in this series are written for a read-alone level of about ages 10 and up, I have used them as read-alouds for
all of my boys, from ages 5 and up. In affordable paperback, so every family can have them.
We are now offering previews of the books in .pdf format. If you don't have Adobe Reader chick here to download it free:

Benny, Boy of the Prairie
author unknown, revised by Sandi Queen, illustrated by Douglas Farnham
The tale of Benjamin Hart, Jr. is a true one, gleaned from the pages of America’s past. Having moved west with
his family as a boy, young Benny’s life is changed the day his father unexpectedly dies, and Benny becomes the
man of the family.
An industrious young man, Benny’s first effort to support his mother and sisters is to make bouquets of wildflowers
from the prairie that he calls home, and sell them in town. Soon, he befriends a kind Christian gentleman who just
happens to be the town storekeeper.
This friendship is one that changes the course of Benny’s life - for in addition to employment young Benny is invited
to a revival meeting at the storekeeper’s church, where he is convicted by the message, and later surrenders his
heart to Jesus Christ.
I was drawn into this sweet story of a young man’s desire to do right by his mother and sisters, and delighted
to see the transformation that takes place in Benny’s heart. Even though he was a “good boy” to begin with, it
is inspiring to see the change that takes place once he realizes that even he, though a “good” boy, is a sinner.
A simple, true story of one boy’s determination, faith, conviction, and boldness to share his faith that will inspire
you to always do your best within your circumstances, I pray you will enjoy this story as much as I have.

My Brother's Life
by R. B. Wainright, Revised by Sandi Queen
illlustrated by Douglas Farnham
When I first came upon an old copy of this heartwarming tale of two brothers, I knew we had to bring this dear
classic back into print for today’s children. This is the tale of two brothers - Paley and Lisle - who are as different
as different can be.
The story tells the tale of Paley’s devotion to the things of this world, and Lisle’s devotion to the things of
the Lord. By adulthood, Paley is indifferent to the things that his brother lives for, yet Lisle’s Christlike love
never ceases to keep his wayward brother mesmerized by his brother’s choices in life.
It is only through Lisle’s illness in later years that the Lord starts to work in Paley’s hardened heart, and he
realizes that his love for his brother is stronger than he thought. He also begins to wonder just what it is about
his younger brother that makes him loved by all, and what inspires him to always put others before himself.
Through caring for his dying brother, Paley comes to know the Lord that shaped his brother’s life, and thus, his
own life is changed as he is transformed into a new creature. He takes over the work of the brother he had formerly
sneered at, at first as a tribute to his brother, but eventually as his own life work.
Through it all, we see the truth that God’s saving power does indeed change and transform lives for His glory.

Tom's First Friend
by Mrs. Cooper, Revised by Sandi Queen
Illustrated Throughout by Douglas Farnham
When I first came upon this heartwarming tale of Tom, a young orphan boy living on the streets of London, I was
immediately drawn into the story by my compassion for this young boy.
How happy I was when Tom was taken in by a young man and his sister, whose own little brother, also named Tom,
had recently passed away unexpectedly. Amidst their grief, Philip and Meta determine from the start to raise Tom,
who has never heard the name of Jesus, as unto the Lord, and for His glory. Their efforts and hard work pay off
at long last when, even though he encounters many trials, tests, and tribulations along the way, Tom gives his
own heart to Jesus Christ, who becomes Tom’s first real Friend.
As the story of Tom’s daily life in Philip and Meta’s household progresses, we see their bonds of love and affection
grow, until Tom truly becomes their “own, own Tom.”
Remembering his roots, Tom is convicted by the Holy Spirit as a young man to go back to the alleys from whence
he came and win lost souls for Christ, that the “unlovely ones” in London’s back alleys might find salvation, peace,
and true freedom in his own Savior. What he finds there will bring as pleasant a surprise to the reader as it did
to Tom himself.

Dr. Max L. Rossvally’s true account of the testimony of a young Civil War drummer boy on his deathbed will touch

Edward VI: England's Valiant Boy King by Douglas S. Farnham
Though the life of England’s King Edward VI was cut
rt by illness, it was a life full of adventure, courage, and
faithfulness to his Christian standards.
This sovereign of British history has long been known as
the “English Josiah” because his zeal for the Word of God
paralleled that of his Judean namesake, and because their
youthful ascents to their respective thrones and their
profound influences upon their respective societies were so
similar. In both their experiences, the light and truth of God’s
Word was proclaimed in their lands after long years of the
darkness of apostasy and ignorance.
The life of Edward Tudor was one of privilege, opulence,
splendor, and true happiness. It was also one of
uncompromising faith put to the test not only by deception
and treachery of Machiavellian proportions but also by
heartrending tragedy. Ultimately, his life was one of glorious
triumph.
Finally, the story of this young king’s life is one that will
inspire the reader of today as much as it did those who knew
him during his brief lifetime, challenging him to stand firm
in their convictions as a Christian, even in the face of intense
opposition.

Test of Allegiance: A Civil War Story by Douglas
S. Farnham
America's Civil War was often referred to as "The Boys' War" - and for good reason. Many young heros,
eager to serve their country and stand up for what they believed in, were quick to sign up.
This is the story of the fictitious MacDermitt twins, Jimmy and Johnny, whose older brother Robbie is a soldier
in the Union Army. The twins' desire to serve, like many true-to-life young heros of the day, prompts them to enlist
as drummer boys, even though they are not yet eleven years old, where they eventually end up on different sides
of the battle. Through a series of real-life adventures, an accurate account of what it was like on both sides
of the war is portrayed, as many famous battles, as well as their participants, are described in great detail.
This book makes a wonderful read-aloud, and with its accompanying study guide, will give your student of upper
elementary through high school age a well-rounded understanding of this important time in America's history.
